In January 1987, a former advertising executive living on the Spanish island of Ibiza claimed he heard a Voice — not a metaphor, not a dream, but a sustained transmission lasting eight days and nights that dictated, in exhaustive detail, a complete system for understanding human nature. What Ra Uru Hu received that winter became Human Design: perhaps the most ambitious synthesis of ancient wisdom and modern science ever assembled into a single framework for self-knowledge.

Origins & History

Robert Alan Krakower was born in Montreal, Canada in 1948. By the mid-1980s, he had left a career in advertising and media, and was living as something of an exile in Ibiza — a man between lives. Then came January 3, 1987.

The date is significant beyond personal mythology. 1987 was the year of the Harmonic Convergence, a globally coordinated meditation event organized by José Argüelles (who would later adapt the Mayan Tzolk'in calendar into the Dreamspell). And on February 24, 1987 — seven weeks after Ra Uru Hu's experience began — astronomers detected supernova SN 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud: the brightest supernova visible from Earth since 1604, when Kepler himself had watched a star explode. Ra Uru Hu described the Voice as a cosmic transmission delivered through neutrinos — the near-massless particles that stream through the sun, through supernovas, through every atom of every body on Earth — as they passed through him.

He renamed himself Ra Uru Hu and spent the following two decades teaching Human Design, first in Europe, then globally. He died in 2011, leaving behind a system that has attracted millions of followers worldwide and generated an entire industry of analysts, coaches, and certification programs.

The Legend

Ra Uru Hu described the eight-day transmission in vivid terms: a disembodied intelligence — a Voice — that spoke in specifics, not generalities. It did not offer philosophy. It offered a mechanics: precise instructions for how to build a system that would map human consciousness and decision-making with a rigor the world had never seen.

The Voice gave him what he called the Rave Mandala — a circular diagram overlaying the Western astrological wheel, the I Ching's 64 hexagrams, the Kabbalah's Tree of Life, and the Hindu chakra system into a single integrated map. At its center: the bodygraph, a mandorla-shaped figure of nine centers connected by 36 channels and 64 gates, calculated from two moments: the exact time of birth, and a moment 88 degrees of the sun's arc before birth — approximately 88 days earlier — representing the "unconscious" or Design layer of the self.

The neutrino theory gave the system its cosmological underpinning: that particles streaming from stars and supernovas imprint biological information on every organism at the moment of its formation. In this reading, the supernova SN 1987A was not incidental — it was the cosmic event that made the transmission possible, a burst of neutrinos so intense it passed through the planet and through Ra Uru Hu in ways ordinary solar emission could not.

Whether one accepts this cosmology literally or as a powerful metaphor, the story it tells is undeniably compelling: that each human being is a unique configuration, crystallized at birth, carrying a specific energetic signature written by the stars themselves.

Core Philosophy

Human Design sorts every person into one of five aura types, each with a distinct Strategy for navigating life correctly:

- Generators and Manifesting Generators (roughly 70% of people): their Strategy is to respond — to wait for life to present something worth engaging, then feel whether the gut says yes or no. - Projectors (roughly 20%): their Strategy is to wait for the invitation — their gifts are recognized and invited, not pushed. - Manifestors (roughly 9%): the only type designed to initiate — their Strategy is to inform before acting, to avoid the resistance that comes from surprising others. - Reflectors (roughly 1%): mirrors of their environment — they are advised to wait a full lunar cycle before making major decisions.

Beneath aura type lies Authority — the inner decision-making faculty that is reliable for that specific person. Some have Sacral Authority (the gut response). Some have Emotional Authority (the clarity that comes after riding the wave). Others have Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected, or Lunar Authority.

The bodygraph's 64 gates correspond directly to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching — the same binary system that describes every possible situation in human experience. Defined gates (colored in the chart) represent consistent energies you carry. Undefined centers (white) are where you are most influenced by others, most conditioned by the world, and paradoxically, where you have the most wisdom to offer — because you have experienced those energies in every flavor.
