What Are the Four Pillars?

BaZi — literally "Eight Characters" — is a Chinese astrological system that encodes your birth year, month, day, and hour into four pairs of characters. Each pair consists of a Heavenly Stem (one of ten) and an Earthly Branch (one of twelve), creating a 2×4 grid that forms your natal chart.

Each of the eight characters carries one of five elemental energies — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — and polarity: Yin or Yang. The interactions between these elements — generating, controlling, weakening, draining — create the dynamic landscape of your character and timing.

The Day Master
The Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar is your most important character — your Day Master. It represents your core self: how you fundamentally process the world, what energizes and depletes you, and what kind of element you naturally attract and need.

The Five Elements in Practice

Wood grows upward, expands, initiates. Wood people tend toward vision, growth orientation, and sometimes difficulty knowing when to stop. Strong Wood years favor new projects, creative launches, and educational endeavors.

Fire illuminates, connects, transforms. Fire people are often charismatic, expressive, and emotionally intense. They need meaning. Fire-dominant charts often show careers in communication, performance, or leadership.

Earth grounds, stabilizes, mediates. Earth types are practical, reliable, and sometimes too accommodating. They function as bridges between other people and between extremes.

Metal refines, structures, discerns. Metal people prize precision and principles. They can cut through to the essential — and sometimes cut too deep. Metal-dominant years favor legal matters, financial planning, and any work requiring sharp judgment.

Water flows, adapts, accumulates wisdom. Water people are often highly intuitive, strategic, and comfortable with ambiguity. They move around obstacles rather than through them.

Luck Pillars: The Decade Shift

What makes BaZi particularly powerful as a timing tool is the concept of Luck Pillars (大運, Dà Yùn). Every ten years, you enter a new Luck Pillar — a major elemental influence that recontextualizes everything in your natal chart for that decade.

"Entering a Water Luck Pillar when your natal chart is dominated by Fire is not good news or bad news — it is a fundamental shift in the landscape of what is possible and what is challenging."

Mythsensus calculates your current Luck Pillar and integrates it with your other nine systems to show how it shapes the broader patterns in your Cosmic Score right now.

BaZi Within the Mythsensus Framework

Within the ten-system synthesis, BaZi contributes most strongly to themes of elemental constitution, decade-scale timing, and career orientation. When BaZi's elemental dominance aligns with the planetary energies in your Western chart and your Vedic Nakshatra, the convergence is particularly significant — these are patterns that multiple civilizations, independently, encoded as important.
